There are many different types of addictions: alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, shopping, exercise, and food to name but a few. But, what they all have in common is psychological and physical impact on our lives. Symptoms of addictions can include, panic attacks, anxiety, sleep disturbance, obsessive behaviours, relationship and work difficulties.
Addiction counselling can help clients understand whether they have an addiction or a habit and also separate addictions from abuse of substance or behaviour.
When working with addiction a client will come to understand where the roots of their addictions are, understand the thought process that drives the cycle of addiction. Clients can gain greater self-awareness and understand what their triggers are and how to work with them.
Addictions don’t just have a negative impact on the person addicted; families and friends can be profoundly affected. Living with or loving a person suffering with addiction can be emotionally destroying, I offer counselling, both group and individual, for families and friends of addicts, helping them understand and come to terms with what is happening to their loved one.
